Hidden Gems In Carlisle

Carlisle Cathedral
Not the most well-known of cathedrals, but Carlisle’s cathedral is in fact 900 years old. Gloriously well built, it still holds a service each day of the year where people of all faiths are welcome to attend. There are voluntary guides who are willing to offer free tours of the cathedral to give you more of an insight into its magnificent history. The Gothic window is one of the largest in England and the roof is an intricate work of art.
A World In Miniature Museum
For something a little different (mind the pun) but a lot of fun, why not pay a visit to this fantastic museum. Proud home of the worlds second smallest teddy bear, “Mini The Pooh,” you are given a magnifying glass upon entry so that you can enjoy the artwork, some of which is smaller than as fingernail! Not only intriguing, a day out here will give you a unique topic to talk about in the future!
Hadrian’s Wall
Built by the Romans to protect from Scottish tribes, this wall has survived for over 2000 years. Contrary to popular belief, this is more than just a “walk along a wall.” Along the trail, there are museums and attractions that tell of Roman history, as well as replicas of Roman forts (naturally not to scale!). As well as the well-laid walking paths, there are designated cycle routes for all abilities and even some off-road tracks.
Old Vergers House
Though it looks seemingly unspectacular from the outside, stepping inside this cottage you are met with an assortment of enchanted wonders. Antiques, vintage finds, random trinkets and sometimes even valuable collectibles are all housed here and there is also a range of Georgian and Victorian furniture.
